What is GPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a numerical representation of your academic achievement across all your courses. It's calculated by converting letter grades to numerical points (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.), multiplying by course weights/credit hours, and averaging. GPA ranges from 0.0 to 4.0, with higher numbers indicating stronger performance.
Why GPA matters: It's used for college admissions, scholarships, academic honors, class rank, job applications, and graduate school. Different institutions and programs have different GPA requirements. This calculator works for all grade levels: elementary, middle school, high school (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior).
Types of GPA: Semester GPA (single term), Cumulative GPA (all courses ever), Major GPA (only major courses), and Class GPA (specific class rank). This calculator supports all types.
Calculation Formulae
Weighted GPA Formula
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ(Total Credits)
Sum of (each grade's point value × course weight) divided by total weight
Letter Grade to Points
GPA to Percentage Conversion
Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100
Example: 3.6 GPA = (3.6÷4)×100 = 90%
How This Calculator Works
- Select Grade Level: Choose your current education level (Elementary through Senior).
- Add Courses: Enter course name, grade (A-F or percentage), and weight/credit hours.
- Convert Grades: Letter grades automatically convert to 4.0 scale points.
- Calculate Weighted Average: Multiplies each grade point by course weight, sums, divides by total weight.
- Convert to Percentage: Divides GPA by 4.0 and multiplies by 100 for percentage display.
- Provide Interpretation: Shows performance level (Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, etc.).
Works for all grade levels: Elementary, middle school, high school. Same calculation methodology across all levels.

Frequently Asked Questions
What weight should I use for courses?
Use credit hours (1-4 typically) or importance weight. If all courses equal, use 1 for all.
Is this calculator official?
This is for estimation only. Official GPA comes from your school registrar and transcript.
Can I use percentages instead of letter grades?
Yes, enter percentages directly or convert: A=90-100%, B=80-89%, C=70-79%, etc.
What's a good GPA?
3.5+ is excellent, 3.0-3.5 good, 2.5-3.0 satisfactory, below 2.0 needs improvement.
Do colleges prefer unweighted or weighted GPA?
Both reported. Use unweighted (all weight=1) for standardized comparison.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
Add ALL courses from all years/semesters. Calculator computes cumulative average.
Works for AP/Honors weighted?
Yes, adjust weight for AP/Honors courses (typically 1.05-1.1 multiplier) or use higher credit hours.
Can I remove a failed course?
No, both calculator and official GPA count all courses including retakes. Both attempts usually included.
