Roof Pitch Correction Factors
Find your roof pitch in the table below. The "Multiply By" value is the correction factor. Multiply your base roof area (flat measurement) by this factor to get actual sloped roof area. Higher pitch = larger correction factor = more materials needed.
| Pitch Ratio | Angle (degrees) | Multiply By | Pitch Ratio | Angle (degrees) | Multiply By |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/12 | 4.8° | 1.003 | 2/12 | 9.5° | 1.014 |
| 3/12 | 14.0° | 1.031 | 4/12 | 18.4° | 1.054 |
| 5/12 | 22.6° | 1.083 | 6/12 | 26.6° | 1.118 |
| 7/12 | 30.3° | 1.158 | 8/12 | 33.7° | 1.202 |
| 9/12 | 36.9° | 1.250 | 10/12 | 39.8° | 1.302 |
| 11/12 | 42.5° | 1.357 | 12/12 | 45.0° | 1.414 |
| 13/12 | 47.3° | 1.474 | 14/12 | 49.4° | 1.537 |
| 15/12 | 51.3° | 1.601 | 16/12 | 53.1° | 1.667 |
| 17/12 | 54.8° | 1.734 | 18/12 | 56.3° | 1.803 |
| 19/12 | 57.7° | 1.873 | 20/12 | 59.0° | 1.944 |
| 21/12 | 60.3° | 2.016 | 22/12 | 61.4° | 2.088 |
| 23/12 | 62.4° | 2.162 | 24/12 | 63.4° | 2.236 |
| Material | Lifespan | Cost Level | Maintenance | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asphalt Shingles | 15-30 years | Low-Medium | Moderate | Most common residential choice |
| 3-Tab Shingles | 15-20 years | Low | Low | Budget-conscious projects |
| Architectural Shingles | 20-30 years | Medium | Low | Better appearance and durability |
| Metal Roofing | 40-70 years | High | Very Low | Long-term investment, energy efficient |
| Ceramic Tile | 100+ years | Very High | Low | Mediterranean/Spanish style homes |
| TPO Membrane | 5-15 years | Low-Medium | Low | Flat commercial roofs |
| EPDM Membrane | 10-15 years | Low | Low | Budget flat roofing option |
| Wood Shakes | 20-40 years | High | High | Premium rustic appearance |
Measurement of roof steepness (rise:run over 12 inches). Example: 6/12 means 6 inches rise per 12 inches horizontal. Standard residential pitches: 4/12 to 8/12. Affects material selection, cost, and drainage.
Eaves:Roof edge that overhangs walls. Typical: 6-24 inches. Provides weather protection for walls and foundation. Adds to total roof area calculation.
Roof Squares:Standard measurement unit: 1 square = 100 square feet. Contractors typically quote in squares. Example: 2,000 sq ft roof = 20 squares.
Ridge:Highest horizontal line where two roof slopes meet. Important for ventilation and water drainage.
Valley:Low point where two roof slopes meet. Channels water off roof. Requires special flashing material.
Flashing:Metal strips that prevent water leaks at valleys, chimneys, vents. Critical for long roof lifespan.
Underlayment:Protective layer under shingles. Provides secondary water barrier. Improves weather resistance and fire rating.
Soffit & Fascia:Soffit: underside of eaves. Fascia: vertical trim board covering rafter tails. Both need maintenance and occasional replacement.
- 3-Tab Shingles: $80-120
- Architectural Shingles: $120-180
- Metal Panels: $150-300
- Ceramic Tile: $400-600
- TPO Membrane: $50-100 (commercial)
- Wood Shakes: $200-400
- Underlayment: Add 10-15% to material cost
