Understanding Purdue University GPA Calculation
Purdue University uses a standardized GPA calculation system that converts letter grades into numerical grade points on a 4.0 scale. Understanding this system helps Boilermakers track academic progress, maintain good standing, and plan for graduation requirements.
GPA Calculation Formula
Purdue calculates GPA using quality points (also called index points). The formula is:
GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours
For example, if you take three courses:
• Course 1: 3 credits, Grade A (4.0) = 12 quality points
• Course 2: 4 credits, Grade B (3.0) = 12 quality points
• Course 3: 3 credits, Grade B+ (3.3) = 9.9 quality points
GPA = (12 + 12 + 9.9) / (3 + 4 + 3) = 33.9 / 10 = 3.39

Note: Grades of P (Pass), N (No Pass), I (Incomplete), W (Withdrawal), and AU (Audit) are not included in GPA calculations.
