Plus Size Bra Fit Features
Wide Bands
Extended bands (38-58) distribute weight evenly across the back, reducing shoulder strain. Look for 3-4+ hook closures for maximum support and adjustability.
Full Coverage Cups
Deeper cups (D-N) provide complete encapsulation and prevent spillage. Vertical seaming offers lift while horizontal seaming provides projection.
Wide Straps
Padded or cushioned straps (1"+) prevent dig-in and distribute weight. Look for adjustable, fully adjustable straps that stay in place.
Strong Underwire
U-shaped or side-stay underwires offer lateral support. Wire should sit flat in the inframammary fold and fully encapsulate tissue.
How to Measure for Plus Size Bras
Wear Your Best-Fitting Bra
Measure while wearing an unpadded bra that fits well. This gives more accurate results for larger busts.
Measure Underbust Firmly
Wrap tape snugly around ribcage just below the bust. Exhale naturally and measure. This should feel firm but not tight. For plus sizes, a firm measurement ensures adequate band support.
Measure Full Bust
Measure at the fullest point of bust (usually nipple level). Keep tape parallel to floor. Lean forward slightly to capture full tissue volume - important for larger busts.
Calculate Your Size
Enter both measurements. Round underbust to nearest even number for band. Subtract band from bust for cup size.
Plus Size Bra Fitting Tips
- The band provides 80% of support - it should be snug on the loosest hook when new
- Larger cups benefit from underwire bras for shape and lift
- Side panels and back smoothing features prevent bulging
- Consider sister sizes - going up a band and down a cup can improve comfort
- Front-closure bras are easier to put on and offer good separation
- Full coverage minimizer bras reduce projection by 1-2 inches
- Replace bras every 6-9 months as elasticity degrades faster with larger sizes
Frequently Asked Questions
Plus size bras typically offer extended cup ranges from A through N and beyond. The progression is: A, B, C, D, DD, DDD/F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N. Specialty brands like Elomi and Goddess stock cups up to N (UK JJ) in extended band sizes.
Plus size bands typically start at 38 or 40 and extend to 56, 58, or 60+ depending on the brand. Lane Bryant/Cacique offers 38-56, Torrid goes 38-50, Glamorise extends to 56, and specialty brands like Ulla Popken go even higher.
The calculation is the same (band = underbust, cup = bust - band), but plus size bras are engineered differently. They feature wider bands, deeper cups, reinforced construction, wider straps, more hooks, and stronger underwires to provide proper support for larger busts.
This usually means the band is too loose (riding up, pulling straps). Try a smaller band with the same or larger cup. For plus sizes, proper band fit is crucial. The band should be parallel to the floor and snug on the loosest hook.
Use sister sizes. If 44D doesn't work, try 42DD (tighter band, larger cup) or 46C (looser band, smaller cup). For plus sizes, erring toward a snugger band usually provides better support. Each maintains the same cup volume.
