🥚 Understanding Ovulation
What is Ovulation?
Ovulation is when a mature egg is released from the ovary. This typically happens about 12-16 days before your next menstrual period (approximately day 14 of a 28-day cycle). The egg travels down the fallopian tube and can be fertilized by sperm within 12-24 hours.
The Menstrual Cycle
Follicular Phase (Days 1-13): Pituitary gland releases FSH, causing ovaries to produce estrogen. Egg develops in follicle. Ovulation (Around Day 14): LH surge triggers egg release. Luteal Phase (Days 15-28): Empty follicle produces progesterone, preparing uterus for pregnancy. If egg isn't fertilized, hormone drop triggers next period.
Fertile Window
Your fertile window is approximately 5-6 days: the 5 days before ovulation and ovulation day itself. This is when pregnancy is most likely. You're most fertile in the 3 days leading up to and including ovulation day. Sperm can survive up to 5 days, so intercourse earlier in the fertile window can still result in pregnancy.
Egg & Sperm Survival
Egg: Survives 12-24 hours after ovulation. Sperm: Can survive up to 5 days in the reproductive tract, though most viable within first 3 days. This is why the 5 days before ovulation are part of your fertile window.
🔍 Signs of Ovulation
Cervical Mucus Changes
As ovulation approaches, cervical mucus becomes more abundant and changes consistency. Non-fertile: Thick, sticky, or absent. Approaching ovulation: Gradually becomes more slippery and stretchable. Peak fertility: Resembles raw egg whites - clear, stretchy, and slippery. This is the most reliable physical sign of ovulation.
Basal Body Temperature (BBT)
Your temperature rises slightly (0.3-0.5°C) after ovulation and stays elevated until your next period. This rise confirms ovulation has occurred but isn't predictive (it happens after ovulation). Tracking BBT over several cycles helps identify ovulation patterns.
Mittelschmerz (Ovulation Pain)
About 20% of people experience mild ovulation pain - a sharp cramp on the side of the ovulating ovary. Pain typically lasts a few minutes to hours and occurs around ovulation time. Absence of pain doesn't mean you're not ovulating.
Other Signs
- Breast tenderness: Slight soreness or sensitivity
- Increased libido: Natural boost in sexual desire
- Bloating: Mild swelling or puffiness
- Mood changes: Slight elevation in mood
- Skin changes: Skin may become slightly oilier
🧮 Calculation Formulas
Ovulation Date Calculation
For 28-day cycle (ovulation day 14):
Ovulation Date = LMP + 14 days
For variable cycles:
Ovulation Date = LMP + (Cycle Length − 14) days
Example: LMP Nov 2, 28-day cycle
Ovulation = Nov 2 + 14 = Nov 16
Fertile Window Calculation
Most Fertile Days = Ovulation Date − 2 to Ovulation Date
Fertile Window End = Ovulation Date
Example: Ovulation Nov 16
Fertile Window = Nov 11 to Nov 16 (6 days)
Peak Days = Nov 14 to Nov 16 (3 days)
Next Period Prediction
Ovulation typically occurs:
Days Before Next Period = Cycle Length − 14
Example: 28-day cycle
Ovulation occurs 14 days before next period
Fertility Percentage by Day
4 days before ovulation: ~15% chance
3 days before ovulation: ~30% chance
2 days before ovulation: ~40% chance
1 day before ovulation: ~50% chance
Ovulation day: ~50% chance
1 day after ovulation: ~5% chance
